Facebook is launching a new feature called ‘Marketplace’ allowing people to buy and sell their stuff to others within their local community, this is seen as a move to take on the likes of eBay and Craigslist.
The Marketplace will be accessible via a new icon at the bottom of the Facebook app. Items will be displayed based on the users location and advanced search functionality will be provided to filter results based on item name, category, price etc.
Selling items will be relatively simple, the user will need to provide basic information such as a product name, description, price and selecting a category, as well as uploading a photo of the product. To purchase an item from the Marketplace you will have to get in direct contact with the seller or make an offer for the item. Currently Facebook says it “does not facilitate the payment or delivery of items in Marketplace”.
This new feature is being rolled out this month to users over the age of 18 in the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand. For now it will only be available via the Android and IOS app, but Facebook says it will eventually becoming to desktop and more countries.
