Instagram in an excellent platform for brands to get exposure and grow their reach. However, it can be difficult to turn followers into paying customers. But that could be about to be made a lot easier with the introduction of shoppable tags on photos.

The retailers tag products in their photos, which are hidden behind a “Tap to view products” button. After selecting their product of choice, users see an in-app details page with a specific product’s price, description, additional photos, and a “Shop Now” button to buy it on the retailer’s website.

It’s good to see Instagram recognising the need for brands to be able to sell their products aside from just building a social media following. By offering them a native solution instead of relying on third-party solution, this will have the benefit of providing an overall better user experience and enable the retailer to increase its sales.

Currently this new feature is being tested by Instagram with 20 US retailer partners including Kate Spade and JackThreads to iOS app users in the US, with plans to expand in the near future. Keep an eye out for Instagram Shoppable.
