Enhancing Newcastle’s bustling Grade I traders’ market
Grainger Market is a much-loved Grade I indoor historic market, which still plays a vital role in Newcastle’s bustling shopping and dining culture, nearly 200 years after it first opened. The covered market is situated in the centre of Newcastle, a stone’s throw away from Grey Street and the iconic Grey’s Monument and has been the lifeblood of many local traders and small businesses from cobblers, high-quality butchers, greengrocers, jewellers, cafes, and fresh food counters.
As one of the oldest, yet most vital retail assets to the city, the Grainger Market faced challenging times during the pandemic. We wanted to ensure the Market reconnected with local residents and the wider community and stayed a tune to the change of shopping habits, consumer lifestyles and enhancing the existing offering in a way that resonated with new audiences and the traders themselves.
We created an engaging, relevant and consistent brand identity to help Grainger Market reach its full potential. We worked alongside Newcastle City Council, Broadoak Asset Management and Faulkner Brown Architects to develop a brand that reflected the voice of the traders and other key stakeholders. One that helped it to successfully connect with the people of the region, and which will be the face of the market as it delivers its future vision.
As the project is being delivered in line with the recently awarded Levelling Up fund, Cool Blue continue to support the ongoing development of the site and support its vision to become the shopping market of choice for the UK and Europe.
