Shopify enters the WordPress market
Last week the e-commerce company Shopify announced a new feature allowing the platform to be integrated into WordPress sites. This will be in the form of a Shopify e-commerce plugin and three new WordPress themes, all currently available for free.
The new Shopify Buy Button plugin is intended for users who want to sell a few products on their WordPress site and still benefit from all the features and security that comes with Shopify. To begin to sell their products users will have had to already have added them to their Shopify store and will need a Shopify Lite account.
Currently the Canadian company occupies around 8% of the e-commerce technology market share, falling significantly behind the current market leader WooCommerce, who dominate with 31%. With Shopify entering the WordPress market it will be interesting to see how they can compete with WooCommerce, whose success is down to being built on the WordPress platform, as well as its simplicity.
