‘Sneakers’ go back much further than you might think, in fact to the late 18th century.
Designed to be used for sport and exercise, people today wear them for reasons of style.
The brand which stands out for me is Converse All-Stars. Produced by Marquis Mills Converse, and endorsed by basketball star Chuck Taylor, as far back as 1923 they become known as Chuck Taylor All-stars.
Kids began wearing them as fashion statements in the 1950s and they became even more popular when James Dean wore sneakers in the classic movie Rebel Without a Cause. Their most iconic big screen showcase was probably in Back To The Future, where Michael J. Fox wears black Chuck Taylors.
For me the fact that the upper canvas is open to creativity – as an artist’s canvas – makes Converse All Stars the best sneaker in the world.
