We approached the task with a creative integrated campaign, including radio advertising, social media advertising, PR, leaflets, press advertising, email marketing and animation.

The campaign – #TeesTakesControl – reached voters across the five local authority areas of the Tees Valley. It told them a story about the creation of the mayoral post, the devolution of powers from Westminster and why it was so important to vote. We gave audiences short and simple messages that related the vote to their daily lives. We used Tees Valley celebrities such as Maximo Park’s Paul Smith and artist Mackenzie Thorpe as recognisable voices to engage residents of the area.

This fast-paced campaign was delivered over just three months, during which time a General Election was called.

Solutions and results

Our activity had a big impact for a modest budget. We instigated debate about the role of the Tees Valley Mayor among social media users, generated excellent broadcast and print media coverage, and raised the profile of the election through targeted advertising.

Our campaign created greater reach than several cities with million-pound budgets. A brilliant feat for a budget in the low five figures.
