In Conversation with True North Construction: Crafting the Future of Residential Living

Founded on a passion for craftsmanship, quality and integrity, True North Construction has quietly built a reputation as one of the North East’s most respected high-end residential builders.

Specialising in bespoke new builds and meticulous refurbishments, the company delivers architect-led projects that combine modern building innovation with traditional attention to detail.

We caught up with Operations Manager Tayler Mitchell to hear more about the business, its journey so far and the exciting projects shaping its future…

CB Insight True North- Tayler Mitchell

Tell us about your role at True North Construction.

As Operations Manager, I oversee the delivery of our high-end residential new builds and refurbishment projects – from planning right through to handover. I’m responsible for maintaining our standards of quality, sustainability and craftsmanship, managing health and safety, and coordinating construction programmes with our project managers and directors. I also work closely with our supply chain and get involved in new business development, meeting clients and forging partnerships to strengthen what we deliver.

How did True North Construction come to be?

The business was founded six and a half years ago by David Roberts and Steven Henderson. Both came from joinery backgrounds and had worked in site management before deciding to set up a company of their own, built around quality, detail and integrity. That ethos still drives us today.

The business has grown steadily, now with a team of project managers, contracts managers, site managers, site supervisors, operatives, apprentices and a dedicated civils team – keeping as much of our work in-house as possible to maintain control over standards.

What core values set True North apart?

We’re committed to becoming one of the North East’s leading high-end residential builders, with a focus on sustainability, innovation and client satisfaction. We’re also proud to be specialists in Passivhaus construction, with awards recognising our leadership in this field.

How would you describe your approach to craftsmanship and client relationships?

It’s quality-driven in every sense. From the materials we select to the trades we work with, everything’s chosen with the client’s long-term experience in mind.

Sustainability isn’t a trend for us – it’s fundamental to how we work. We aim to build lasting homes and equally lasting relationships with the people who live in them.

What types of projects do you specialise in?

We focus exclusively on high-end residential projects, bespoke new builds and refurbishments for clients who value excellence. These are typically architect-led and can range from heritage farmhouse renovations to modern Passivhaus homes.

Are there any recent projects that capture what True North is all about?

A recent Passivhaus home we delivered in Tynemouth really represents who we are. It’s a bespoke, energy-efficient property completed to an exceptional standard, with a full interior fit-out by our sister company, North & Co. The clients were thrilled and it’s a project we’re really proud of!

How important is working with local materials and talent?

Hugely important. We work closely with local designers, suppliers and trades, and are developing our in-house design capabilities to bring even more cohesion to our projects. Supporting local isn’t just good for the community – it enhances the authenticity of our builds too.

Any collaborations you’re particularly proud of?

Our long-running partnership with award-winning architects Mawson Kerr has been a huge part of our success. Together, we’ve delivered some of the region’s most admired homes.

How is True North embracing modern construction practices?

We blend traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology. From high-performance insulation and airtight construction to smart home systems and sustainable materials, our builds prioritise energy efficiency, durability and comfort. Passivhaus principles play a big part in that, dramatically reducing energy use while improving living standards.

What role does the community play in your work?

While we specialise in private homes, we’re deeply rooted in the North East.

We support local employment, work with apprentices and actively engage with the next generation of construction professionals. We’ve hosted visits from Northumbria University students and the RIBA Young Architectural Builders Forum to give them hands-on insight into live projects.

Students from Northumbria University visited the site to gain first-hand insight into the fundamentals of a live construction project. During their walkaround, they explored the process of building a timber frame Passivhaus, delivered in collaboration with local architects Mawson Kerr.

What’s on the horizon for True North?

We’re aiming to grow our turnover by taking on larger, more complex projects that align with our strengths. That means expanding our partnerships with top architects, investing in innovation and enhancing our design capabilities.

Are you looking to expand geographically?

While our base is Newcastle, we already work across Northumberland, Alnwick, Amble and Hexhamshire. We’re open to taking on projects further afield when the right opportunity comes along.

How do you see the local construction industry evolving and how is True North preparing?

The sector’s evolving fast, with greater emphasis on energy efficiency, design excellence and client experience. We’re not just adapting to that change, we’re helping to shape it.

Our commitment to Passivhaus, investment in in-house design and collaborative, quality-led approach positions us at the forefront.

Finally…  what’s been the most rewarding part of your journey so far?

The recognition from awards and peers is great, but nothing compares to handing over a home that exceeds expectations and seeing the joy it brings to our clients.

And if you had to sum up True North in a sentence?

Delivering quality across the region – that’s what we’re here for!
